The faintest curl touched the corner of Cox's mouth when he caught reactions from the corner of his eye from the other end of the table. His gaze remained fixed upon the Ravenclaw table, expression otherwise unchanged even when goblets went toppling over, but beneath the table his fingers shifted against the fabric of his robes. A minute movement of two fingers was enough to send another ripple through the shadows.

He was merely encouraging the kettle to whistle.

His attention was pulled down the length of the table as small talk and evening greetings continued, his attention settling briefly upon the new healer. Cox offered Julien a small, polite nod.

He would, regrettably, have to get to know the man. There was his nephew to consider, for one thing. And while Cox had no particular desire to become acquainted with every new member of staff simply for the sake of collegiality, his responsibilities as Head of House did impose certain obligations upon him. It would be negligent, after all, not to be at least somewhat personable with the person who would presumably be responsible for putting Claws back together whenever curiosity inevitably got the better of them.

His gaze shifted just in time to catch the Herbology professor offering Julien her hand and offering a quaint anecdote. Poor sod. Hopefully Burbage would also find a new fixation and leave him the hell alone this term.

The Great Hall's other aromas did little to improve his mood. His nose wrinkled severely when an unmistakably artificial stench wafted past him, the one that was always following Kraetos with the sort of tenacity generally associated with poorly brewed potions that were impossible to remove from the bottom of cauldrons. Didn't matter if the man hadn't an open bag of whatever rubbish on him or not, the alchemist simply knew.

It was by the grace of Sarika that his face shifted into something considerably more pleasant and ― dare we say ― personable.

"Obviously," he nearly grinned, sarcasm drained entirely from his tone for once. The answer seemed so self-evident that he appeared momentarily uncertain why it had required asking. His attention drifted back toward the Ravenclaw table, lingering there a little longer than it had before.

There were new faces among them, students who had not yet learned which corridors to avoid, which professors were more lenient and which would throw you in detention for minor trespassings, or which house elf would be most likely to appease their midnight snack cravings when the kitchens were most certainly meant to be closed. There would be students who excelled, students who struggled, students who needed someone to notice that something was wrong before they thought to say so themselves.

Cox had been a student once...

... he knew precisely what it was to need that person and find no one there.

"They're my students."

And, because his sister had once again so ardently fussed at him about attempting to be less frosty, he added, "I understand you've taken on Arithmancy this term as well." Understand was a peculiar way of phrasing a fact, but alas. His gaze settled briefly upon her, and there was the faintest softening to his expression. "There is rather more natural overlap between the two than people tend to overlook... both require an ability to recognize relationships that are not immediately obvious."
