"The originals." Étienne's answer came without hesitation, causing his smile to widen slightly at the question. "The replicas are useful for study, but they're missing the interesting parts. The wear patterns. Residual enchantments. The tiny inconsistencies left behind by centuries of handling. History is far more fascinating when you can observe the actual object rather than a copy of it." Unfortunately, the château seemed determined to prevent precisely that.
When Jonathan winced, Étienne felt a small measure of satisfaction. Not because his assessment had been correct, but because the reaction confirmed he had identified the problem.
"Quite that bad. You've been wandering around looking like the protagonist of a tragic French novel." His tone was dry, but the image amused him enough to earn a brief smile. "All you need now is a rainstorm and a doomed romance."
As Jonathan finally accepted the invitation and sat down, Étienne inclined his head in acknowledgment. The gratitude, however, caught him slightly off guard.
"For this?" he asked. "Jonathan, I offered you a chair, not an oasis. And you don't need to thank me for existing in your general vicinity." Despite the teasing, there was warmth beneath it.
Then came the real confession. The thing haunting nearly every seventh-year corridor conversation these days.
"If it helps, I don't think having no idea is nearly as uncommon as people pretend." The adults all seemed convinced that certainty arrived automatically with age. Étienne had yet to see evidence supporting the theory.
"What do you actually enjoy?" he asked. "Not what you're good at. Not what your family expects. Not what sounds impressive when professors ask. What do you find yourself wanting to do when nobody is telling you what you should be doing? That's usually a better place to start than trying to select a career for the next forty years."
Jon bit back the sizable laughter that threatened to escape his lips. He thought he recognised why Étienne had raised his voice, so he shot a casual glance around. Uh huh, there was at least one adult somewhere around, there had to be. Or at least, other students their age and who were perhaps a little more mature that the thought of ‘stealing’ had not crossed their mind? “Very poor,’’ Jon agreed, his own voice rising by half an octave. See what a good friend he was to back the other guy up?
He then devoted his time to studying the artefacts intently; the words directed at him being absorbed intently. “Oh wow. That’s interesting.” Jonathan frowned slightly, tilting his head as he looked on more intently. Now that Étienne had mentioned it, it was easy to notice that indeed some pieces were missing. “You must have really spent a great deal of time looking at these to notice the missing bits. I bet some of them aren’t that easy to spot. Which of these are you most interested in?” A hand gestured at the display. Was it nautical instruments? Astronomical ones?
Finally, the laugh he had suppressed earlier managed to escape. Thankfully, it wasn’t as loud as was anticipated. “And now I’m imagining myself as a brokenhearted French prince for some reason.’’ Not that brokenhearted part had been that off from Étienne’s playful words. Though, one wouldn’t suspect anything as such due to the manner in which Jon carried himself. AKA he didn’t wear his heart on his sleeve anymore.
He rolled his eyes. “Yes, but you were kind enough to invite me to join you. Which meant I interrupted your scheming.” Johnny winked. Though his words were light to match Étienne’s warm ones, he was genuinely pleased that his friend was willing to lend an ear. And perhaps Jon would be able to learn more about these artefacts, if Étienne chose to enlighten him.
Those next words, simple but said with such confidence… they released some of the tension that the young man had been feeling. It was enough to make him sit up a bit straighter in the comfortable seat. “You really think so? I mean, everyone always seem to have it together, have it all figured out… does anyone even realise the sort of pressure on us to have a decision before we graduate?” The question posed to him was pondered upon. As he did this, Jon suddenly realised - by twisting and turning slightly - that the chair was a spinny one. Without hesitation, he did a three-sixty degree turn. The action further made him feel more relieved. “Ballet!” Another full turn. “Wheee! This is fun! I also enjoy Quidditch and arts. I wouldn't count quidditch that much, however. My dad is really into that.” |
