"Lies," Jae said immediately without even looking up from the magazine. One finger lifted from the page to point vaguely in Adrian's direction, as though he were presenting irrefutable evidence before the Wizengamot. "You've been on the same page for ages. Whatever's happening in that book, I assure you it isn't holding your attention hostage."

His mouth curved into a smug grin as he loosened his grip on the magazine and shifted further onto one elbow, sprawled comfortably across the foot of Adrian's bed.

"Besides," he added, tapping the otter headline, "the truly unbelievable bit for me is that all three of them supposedly turned into otters. What are the odds of that? Maybe I need another private consultation with Professor Bom-VOSS-ee to sort that out."

The fact that he sounded entirely serious for half a second made it considerably worse. Truthfully, Jae quite liked being good at Transfiguration and would prefer Professor Voss continue viewing him as an exceptionally gifted, charming young wizard rather than some pea-brained teen consulting her about revolting tabloid mush. There were reputations to maintain, after all.

She might start suspecting his brain was going to the birds.

Adrian's comments about becoming a cat earned a sharp bark of laughter.

"Unleeeeeeeeeeess a certain Ravenclaw happens to have a cat allergy, I suppose you've got a point."

He dragged a hand through his hair before letting himself flop backward more dramatically, shoulders sinking into the mattress. One arm dangled off the side of the bed while his head tipped far enough over the edge that the room briefly appeared upside down.

"Here and there," he replied with a dismissive little wave of his hand. "Look, don't judge me for having a guilty pleasure. Between the mountain of coursework they've dumped on us this term, I've earned the right to read this sort of journalistic profanity."

NEWTs are an entire year away ― an entire year ― and yet every professor had decided they were all one missed essay away from becoming unemployable, destitute, and forced to live beneath a bridge somewhere.

"Honestly," he sighed, shaking his head mournfully, "if I spend four months as a cat, it'll be because of academic burnout."
