Not because she was particularly loud — those of small stature rarely were, though the stairway was doing her no favors there — but because years of dance had trained him to feel changes in a space the same way other people noticed a draft beneath a door.
So he finished the routine. A turn. A sharp hit of the shoulders. One final step that carried him across the stone before the music faded into the faint crackle of the radio.
Only then did he glance over his shoulder, gaze founding the younger girl immediately, lingering for half a beat before the corner of his mouth twitched into a smile.
"Bonjour," he winked, body relaxing out of his final pose and rolled his shoulders on his way to grabbing his water bottle from atop a crate. He took a drink before whipping a handkerchief out of his bag on the ground and wiped the mouth of it before offering it in her direction. "You look like you're in need of a little refreshment."
He had outstanding oral hygiene ― as should be obvious by his smile, accentuated by his well moisturized lips ― in case that was a concern.
"First year, yeah? Meinir, if I'm not mistaken." A laugh escaped him as he dropped onto another of the nearby crates, reaching his bag beside the radio and, after a moment of rummaging, a couple packets of chocolate covered biscuits from a distinctly un-British looking bag and held one out to her as well. "My first week here, I got lost trying to find the Astronomy Tower. Spent nearly an hour climbing stairs because I was convinced every spiral staircase had to lead to the same place eventually due to them moving for the sake of it."
Beauxbatons had at least possessed the decency to feel designed by people who occasionally considered the concept of convenience. It was almost funny, when he looked back, at just how much he'd hated Hogwarts when he'd first arrived. The moving staircases. The ghosts. The weather. The way everything felt unfamiliar outside of being reunited with his best mate.
"Though," he added, ripping open one packet and popping it into his mouth, "the view up here is better than anything Beauxbatons had. So I guess I can give the stairs a pass for being annoying."
